Overview

Morgan Stanley Private Equity Asia is one of the leading private equity investors in the Asia-Pacific region.  Established in 1993, we invest primarily in highly structured minority investments and control buyouts in growth-oriented companies.

Morgan Stanley Private Equity Asia specializes in privately negotiated minority investments in companies with substantial business operations in the Asia-Pacific region.  We target fast-growing businesses with strong brands, sustainable competitive advantages and proven track records of financial performance.

On a selective basis, we also pursue control investments where we believe we can add significant value to the business. Our investment process is geared toward generating returns through intrinsic value creation, as opposed to employing excessive financial leverage or relying on continuously increasing public market values.

Our team invests across sectors, particularly in the areas of consumer products, industrial products, financial services, health care and telecom/technology. Companies based in China and Korea have received a significant percentage of the total dollars we have invested since 1993, but we actively seek geographic diversification within our portfolios and we have executed deals in most major countries in the region.

We take a hands-on approach to providing our portfolio companies with the assistance they need to continue to thrive within their markets. Our Investment Team devotes a significant amount of its time to working with management teams at the board level to advise, improve and support the execution of their business plans.

Each Investment Team member leverages their skills to add value to portfolio companies by providing guidance on critical strategic and financing decisions, formulating and directing operating and growth strategies, raising and allocating capital and evaluating add-on acquisitions. The Investment Team also helps portfolio companies implement best practices by recruiting talented executives, designing appropriate incentive structures and establishing rigorous financial controls and governance systems. We believe that a proactive approach post-investment is a key driver of value creation, particularly in certain developing markets in Asia.

Since 1993, Morgan Stanley Private Equity Asia has been a major presence in the private equity market within the Asia-Pacific region.  Our team consists of over 60 investment professionals who work from our offices in Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, Seoul, Mumbai and Bangkok. We have an established track record of working with portfolio companies to enhance their value as evidenced by our successful history of negotiating exits and generating returns for our Limited Partners.

We believe that our team’s association with Morgan Stanley, a leading global financial services firm with a significant presence in the region, provides our portfolio companies with unparalleled access to industry experts, managerial talent, intellectual capital and operational resources to help them execute their business strategies.

Alternative investments are speculative and include a high degree of risk. Investors could lose all or a substantial amount of their investment. Alternative investments are suitable only for long-term investors willing to forego liquidity and put capital at risk for an indefinite period of time. Alternative investments are typically highly illiquid – there is no secondary market for private funds, and there may be restrictions on redemptions or assigning or otherwise transferring investments into private funds. Alternative investment funds often engage in leverage and other speculative practices that may increase volatility and risk of loss. Alternative investments typically have higher fees and expenses than other investment vehicles, and such fees and expenses will lower returns achieved by investors.

In the ordinary course of its business, Morgan Stanley engages in a broad spectrum of activities including, among others, financial advisory services, investment banking, asset management activities and sponsoring and managing private investment funds. In engaging in these activities, the interest of Morgan Stanley may conflict with the interests of clients.

Alternative investment funds are often unregulated, are not subject to the same regulatory requirements as mutual funds, and are not required to provide periodic pricing or valuation information to investors. The investment strategies described in the preceding pages may not be suitable for your specific circumstances; accordingly, you should consult your own tax, legal or other advisors, at both the outset of any transaction and on an ongoing basis, to determine such suitability.

No investment should be made without proper consideration of the risks and advice from your tax, accounting, legal or other advisors as you deem appropriate.
